Mr. Amitava Chakraborty
Amitava Chakraborty, is Director at Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute (BFTI). Prior to this post, he served eight years as the Director General of WTO Cell (Additional Secretary), in Ministry of Commerce of Bangladesh.
Mr. Chakraborty is engaged in high-level policy designing and advising for the government and various international development agencies. He served in the boards and working groups of a number of national, regional, and international development organizations and networks. He worked as the main focal person in the Ministry of Commerce to finalize the US-Bangladesh Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum Agreement (TICFA) and successfully concluded the signing of the agreement. He also led many negotiating teams for regional and bilateral trade agreements on behalf of Bangladesh.
Mr. Chakraborty pioneered the formulation of Competition Act, Consumers Rights Protection Act, Multi-Level Marketing Act, Custom Law, Export-Import Policy etc. He also contributed to revise the Company Act. He was a regular negotiator in the WTO for eight years and participated in four Ministerial Conferences of the WTO and successfully ensured the benefits of Bangladesh in the Multilateral Trading System.
